...Easy Reading for Hardworking People

irene-green-wall2Irene Oda has been ESPCP President for four years, which serves 525+ classified employees in the Clover Park School District. Irene is released part-time from her job in Transportation as a bus driver. I had fun interviewing her before the holiday break. -- jo benedetti

What's the best part of your job? The best part is helping members in a bind. And I like working with the district to solve problems.

What would you like members to know about your job? That I love this job! Yes, there are many sleepless nights and I do wonder sometimes if I am not thinking of all the options. The job can be heartbreaking, especially during RIFs. Sometimes our members get themselves in a pickle of their own doing and the union can't always fix it.

Who would you like to see as President of the U.S.? Feel free to choose me! I can't think of anyone brave or foolish enough.

What show do you never miss on TV? I get up at 4 am to go to work, so I watch my favorite show on the weekend, it's The Good Wife.

What's your greatest fear? Heights and birds.

Oh c'mon....birds! What about spiders or cougars or snakes? Nope, it's birds.

What trait do you dislike in others? Dishonesty.

What do you admire? Perseverance.

How do you think you bug people? By being loud. I'm half Italian!

If  you could change one thing about yourself? My hair. I want it thick and curly!

OK, so I meant .... what about your personality? I wouldn't change a thing.

Oh for goodness sakes! Let ME answer that one for you! I wish you could be a little more neat and tidy in the office for starters!

What are you good at? Cooking.

What's your favorite thing to cook? Anything Italian.

Who would you like to have to dinner? Bernie Madoff.

If you do, I think you should have Kevin Bacon bring Mike Tyson too while you're at it ! (Explanation: Madoff is in prison for his  billion dollar Ponzi scam. The actor Kevin Bacon was one of his victims, and of course Mike Tyson is the famous boxer.)

Who do you admire? Elizabeth I of England. She was a woman in a man's world.

How about somebody more current? ...And feel free to choose me! I would choose Jill Biden. She continues to work and she works in education despite having all these public engagements and she has to put up with Joe. She's real.

What's your favorite commercial? I love that e-Trade baby!

Who/what do you think is ridiculous? Reality TV stars, especially any of those housewives!

Who do you think is brilliant? And again feel free to choose me! Small business people who get to sell their stuff/inventions on HSN or QVC.

What do you like to do to unwind? Drink wine, watch movies, read my Kindle, it really depends on the time of year.

So what's on your Kindle? I am so excited about this! My goal is to build this huge library of authors. So far I only have 55 books since June. Lots of Elizabeth George, Christopher Reich, Ken Follett, Thomas Hardy, Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace counts for at least 5 books, Henning Mankell. I think I had better stop here.

Holy cow! When are you going to have time to read War and Peace? As a matter of fact I have already read it twice. I even have it in German and Italian.

Well now you're just showing off!

What book would you recommend? Do I really have to choose? I like Christopher Reich or Elizabeth George.

Those sound boring, can't you choose another? Pillars of the Earth.

What's the stupidest thing you've ever done? Sorry, just can't narrow it down to one....

You mean you've never accidentally tucked your dress into your pantyhose? Well I broke my leg last year at Costco.

What do you wish someone would invent? Time Travel!

Off the top of your head, give us some good advice? Treat yourself well first.

I like that! So i'll end with it!
